Ljubljana, 21 October 2026 – The Slovenian Environment Agency (ARSO) organised an expert consultation entitled From Water Balance to Practical Information for Water Management, which included a roundtable discussion featuring Dr Sašo Šantl, a representative of the Slovenian Water Institute (IzVRS). During the event, experts presented the mGROWA water balance model, its application in Slovenia and Germany, and the potential use of its results in assessing water resource availability, monitoring drought and adapting to climate change.

Dr Sašo Šantl, Head of the Hydrology and Hydraulics Department, emphasised during the roundtable discussion the importance of mGROWA model outputs for water planning and management. He explained that the model results, which complement existing hydrological data and analyses, are already being used in the preparation of River Basin Management Plans (RBMPs), particularly to assess the availability of water resources, especially groundwater.

He also highlighted the considerable potential for broader application of the model in water management. Further development of the model and its integration with other models would be particularly beneficial, enabling more effective identification and planning of measures to ensure the long-term availability of water resources. This will become increasingly important in the coming decades, particularly in terms of safeguarding Slovenia’s water and food security.
